Marjoram Essential Oil (Origanum majorana) has a woody, spicy aroma which helps to calm the nerves. A calming oil, Marjoram has a warming effect on both mind and body and soothes tense muscles after exercise. It is beneficial for occasional simple nervous tension and may also be used for cooking. Marjoram has an approximate ORAC of 1,390,055 (TE/L). TE/L is expressed as micromole Trolox equivalent per liter.
Historical Data: Marjoram was known as the "herb of happiness" to the Romans and "joy of the mountains" to the Greeks. It was believed to increase longevity. Listed in Dioscorides' De Materia Medica (AD 78), Europe's first authoritive guide to medicines that became the standard reference work for herbal treatments for over 1,700 years. It was listed in Hildegard's Medicine, a compilation of early German medicines by highly regarded Benedictine herbalist Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179). Marjoram is one of the essential oils used in Raindrop Technique.
Uses: With Marjoram's soothing properties, it heps relieve body and joint discomfort and may also soothe the digestive tract. May help lower blood pressure and promote intestinal peristalsis.
